The show “Dynamic Yunnan” in Kunming is a masterpiece by Yang Liping, who leads the choreography and casting. Yang, a very popular dancer from the Bai ethnic group in Xishuangbanna, began her career at the age of 13 and has been dancing for over 30 years. Without any professional training, Yang is China’s most famous dancer famous for her “peacock dance”, a particularly beautiful and graceful dance that she created herself.
For this show, Yang spent a year in Yunnan Province collecting and sorting folk music and searching for dancers and singers. More than 75% of the performers are local rural farmers found in the outlying villages of Yunnan and most of them are from ethnic groups including Yi, Miao, Tibetan, Dai, Bai, Va and Hani.
The show, which is held every night from 20:00 to 21:40, consists of seven acts with various themes including cloud, sun, moon, forest, fire, mountain. “Dynamic Yunnan” shows the most indigenous, vivid and original ethnic folk art, not only in terms of music, but also the costumes that reproduce the characteristics of Yunnan minorities. After its first performance in Kunming, “Dynamic Yunnan” was performed in major Chinese cities and then abroad under the name of “Looking for Shangri-La”.
We highly recommend this show for your first visit to Kunming.
