Yuanmou Earthen Forest 元谋土林

The amazing Yuanmou Earth Forest site is located about 2 hours drive from Kunming or 210 km. Access is via a new highway, then continues by a small road to the different sites in the region, including Hutiaotan, Langbapu, Banguo, Xinhua and Wumao, but the most famous and large earth forest remains that of Yuanmou.

The site gives the impression of being far from everything, an astonishing desert landscape that contrasts with the rest of Yunnan. Made up of waterways, canyons, and columns of earth of different kinds, it feels like a desert in the West of the United States.

The different shapes of earth columns, which sometimes give the impression of being made up of trees forming a forest, hence the name of the sites, are the result of the erosion of the earth that goes back 1 or 2 million years.

Between Yuanmou and Kunming, you can stop at Wuding, to visit the Lion Mountain, made up of temples, cliffs and forests. From Yuanmou, you can also continue your journey to Heijing, an ancient city that knew its glory with the production of salt.
