Only 2,5 hours drive from Kunming, this could be an idea of a day trip from Kunming

The red lands of Lexiaguo or Dongchuan, are located 220 km north of Kunming. Hong Tudi (Red Land in Chinese) is the tourist name of a rural region located near the city of Dongchuan in Yunnan near the border with Sichuan province, on the foothills of the snow-capped Jiaozi Mountain (Jiaozi XueShan 4247m).
Why “Red Lands”?
The land in this region is indeed reddish in color, and the landscapes resulting from the cultivation of these terraced fields are enchanting. All year round, these hills offer a unique spectacle of colors. It is very interesting for photographers, even if you have to count on the luck of having good light. The region is still not very touristy. There are several places to visit, including viewpoints on the terraced fields and “red lands”, especially near the villages Huashitou, Luoxiagou (or Lexiaguo) and Damakan.
Access to the red lands of Dongchuan
It now takes about 2,5 hours only by private car from Kunming, after the recent years (2020-2024) road renovation. You can combine the rend lands with a visit in the region of the snow-capped mountain Jiaozi.
Visit fees for the region: 68RMB per person (free by staying one night in a hotel in the region)
