Jinghong 景洪

Presentation of the city of Jinghong

A large tropical town located on the banks of the Mekong, just before it enters Laos, Jinghong enjoys a tropical climate and lush nature, as well as the welcome of its population.
The city offers beautiful markets where you can find tropical fruits and various vegetables in abundance. Its tropical parks and gardens provide access to sublime pagodas and temples dressed in gold, in a very South Asian tone very particular to the Xishuangbanna region. There are many minorities here whose inhabitants are spread across the borders, as far as Burma, Laos, Vietnam and elsewhere in Asia. It is the Dai who have most structured the region, through their diligent agricultural work and the calm temperament of the South Asians. Here we find certain Thai subtleties in the famous Peacock dance, all grace and finesse.
Don’t miss a little excursion to Manting Park in the city, to see the big Buddha. The city’s botanical garden, easily accessible, is a good alternative to Menglun Garden. Every evening, you can attend the sound and light show of traditional Mengbalanaxi songs and dances, including the Peacock dance. Also, you will find along the Mekong in the evening the traditional night market so present in all tropical countries.
On the culinary side, Dai food is rich and varied, with delicious and natural tastes. Do not miss the famous ‘Shao Kao’, local barbecues, with succulent fish, bananas, and other surprises.
A very pleasant and relaxing stopover for the country, because despite its status as a district capital, this city remains on a human scale, on a quiet tropical rhythm very pleasant for travelers.

Jinghong Tropical Flower and Plant Botanical Garden

This garden is a large park located in the heart of Jinghong City, and covers about 80 hectares. Originally, the garden served as an experimental field for the Yunnan Institute of Tropical Crops, established in 1953. Rubber, the most important commercial crop in Xishuangbanna, was introduced, developed and popularized by this institute.
The World Horticultural Exhibition was held in Kunming in 1999 in Yunnan, during which many exotic tropical flowers and ornamental plants were displayed, cultivated using cutting-edge technology. After this exhibition, experimental research programs were opened to the public.
The Tropical Flower and Plant Garden is easy to access. If you have little time, Jinghong Garden can very well replace Menglun Tropical Botanical Garden. Although it is a bit more touristy (but still quite acceptable) it offers a great opportunity for a relaxing walk or to learn a bit more about the local tropical plants. Entrance fees are 40 RMB.
