Introduction to the Octagonal Pavilion in Mengzhe
The Octagonal Pavilion is located in Jingzheng Village of Mengzhe, Menghai County, about 70 kilometers west of Jinghong and Xishuangbanna. Built in 1701, the pavilion was originally designed to house high-ranking local monks. Hans architects provided assistance during the construction.
The original building was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976. The current building was restored in 1981 and is 21 meters high and 10 meters in diameter. Layer upon layer, no fewer than ten roofs form the upper part, each symbolizing the precepts of Buddhism. Eight attics have been built under the roofs: they represent the eight disciples of Sakyamuni.
Like the White Stupa, the Octagonal Pavilion is one of the three most famous Theravada Buddhist buildings in Yunnan. The place is not yet overrun by tourists and remains a peaceful and religious site above all. We suggest that a visit to the Pavilion is combined with a visit to the local markets, ethnic villages and a short walk to Mount Nannuo.
Entrance to the Pavilion will cost you 10RMB per person.
