Description of Nuodeng
Nuodeng is a small village perched on a hillside, in a pleasant and relaxing landscape of typical Yunnan red earth, pine forests and farming villages.
The village of Nuodeng is a 2h30 hour drive from Dali, 2h30 hours from Weishan and 3 hours from Shaxi. Its altitude is 2200m. To get there from Dali, first take the motorway and then a mountain road to Yunlong and then Nuodeng.
Beware: the village is on a slope and can only be reached on foot. Mules can carry loads, but not travellers. The alleyways are made of large carved stones, so we advise you to take a stick if it rains, especially in July and August.
On site, you can visit the temple of Confucius and its monastery, located at the very top of the village. It’s a pleasant walk from the village of Nuodeng, taking around 1 hour each way along a stone path. There is currently no entrance ticket, but it should be available soon!
From Nuodeng, you can also wander along the old tea and horse routes on the hillside mule tracks. One of our guides can take you there to visit villages cut off from the world. A 5/6 day itinerary is possible from Nuodeng to Shaxi.
A visit to this off-the-beaten-track village will give you the chance to meet pleasant, smiling families and grandmothers who make incense, among other things.
Nuodeng is famous for its ancient salt wells, a much-appreciated currency on the old tea and horse routes.
There are a few small, friendly family-run inns on site, 100% local colour. Alternatively, you can stay in the town of Yunlong, 7km from Nuodeng, in a 4-star hotel.
