The village of Zhoucheng

In the Dali region, exactly 23 km north of the old town of Dali and north-west of Lake Erhai, lies the very pleasant village of Zhoucheng. Home to around 1,500 families, Zhoucheng is one of the largest villages in the entire region, and is a great place to take a stroll and meet its inhabitants, who still live in the traditional way, and its beautiful Bai-style houses. The old town is home to a number of pleasant temples, including one dedicated to the local god Benzhu, and many craftsmen still work with Batik fabric. If you wish, you can try your hand at the batik technique and create your own design on a fabric of your choice, comfortably seated in one of the oldest houses in the village, in the home of Xiao Bai’s family, who continue to use natural dyes, with no added chemicals. The workshop lasts 2 to 3 hours, depending on your dexterity, and you’ll leave with your own creation. The family also offers a variety of batiks for sale, from simple scarves to the most elaborate dresses, so you can discover all the possibilities of this ancient textile decoration process.
