Old town of Dali 大理古城

The old town of Dali is surrounded by ramparts and 4 monumental gates coinciding with the 4 points of the compass. The city is criss-crossed by pedestrian streets lined with shops selling jewellery, fabrics, marble and tea, among other things. Dali is famous for its marble, which is displayed in paintings in all the city’s shops. Don’t miss the park in the heart of the cobbled streets, where you’ll see men playing mahjong or cards.

Take a look in the trees and you’ll see birds in cages, singing to the rhythm of their master’s game. If you’re wondering what the women are frying in the streets, the best thing to do is to try it, and you might recognise the flavour of milk cream toasted with a little local honey. The best thing to do is to get away from the touristy streets and take the little lanes, which are full of life and surprises!

An amazing Catholic church stands in the centre of the old town, not to be missed during your next stay in Dali.

There are a number of hotels and inns in Dali’s old town. We recommend the Fairy Land hotel in the heart of the old town, or La Maison Suzanne, a little way from the hustle and bustle of Dali, or Jim’s Tibetan Hotel.
