Chaoyang Arch 朝阳楼
Chaoyang Arch in Jianshui
Located in the heart of the old town of Jianshui, the Chaoyang Arch (Tower facing the Sun) is also known as the ‘Tian An Men Miniature’ because of its structure, similar to that of Beijing, and its vermilion colour. It was built in 1328, 28 years before Tiananmen was constructed. Measuring 28 metres high, it was once used as a fortified gate to defend Jianshui against invaders.
It has become a popular meeting place for the locals. Today, a small bird market is held at the base of the tower, while the upper floor houses a tea room, where simple shows are held in the evenings, as well as exhibitions of old photographs.
Admission is now charged at 15RMB per person.
