An active and varied itinerary in the heart of Yunnan’s mountains
This “outdoor” journey through Northern Yunnan combines major highlights (Dali, Shaxi, Shangri-La, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Lijiang) with more confidential stages such as Weishan, Weibaoshan, Eryuan, Niujie, Tacheng, Cizhong, Yubeng, Baoshan and Wumu. The first days set an easy pace between Kunming and Dali, with cycling around Erhai Lake, hot springs in Eryuan, nights in charming Bai guesthouses and homestays, and visits to the Taoist Weibaoshan mountain and the preserved old town of Weishan. The trip then continues towards Shaxi and the rock carving site of Shibaoshan, before heading north along the Yangtze River to the Tibetan areas of Tacheng and Cizhong, where you can observe Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys, discover mountain vineyards and small Tibetan Catholic villages.
The second part of the journey takes on a more alpine feel, with the Yubeng trek at the foot of the Meili Mountains, several days of flexible hikes (to a sacred waterfall or to the base camp), then a return via Feilaisi, rafting on the upper Yangtze, Songzanlin Monastery in Shangri-La and hikes in Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of China’s most spectacular canyons. Finally, the trip ends in the Yangtze valley around Wumu and Baoshan, Naxi villages perched above the river, before reaching Lijiang and Shuhe, with via ferrata, e-scooters, visits to Baisha and Yuhu villages and a more flexible day in Lijiang. The programme is demanding overall (cycling, hiking and outdoor activities), but the itinerary and selected accommodations are designed to offer a good level of comfort, constant logistical support (English-speaking driver-guide, support vehicle, high-speed trains) and a balance between effort, rest and cultural discovery
