Southwest China itinerary, from Yunnan to Guizhou and Guangxi
This trip is designed for travellers who want to spend real time crossing southwest China, from the karst landscapes of Yunnan to the ethnic minority villages of Guizhou and the limestone peaks of Guangxi. Over 23 days, you travel from Kunming, Yuanyang and Jianshui to Dali, Xizhou, Shaxi, Shangri‑La and Lijiang, then on to Guiyang, Kaili, Zenlei, Zaidang, Jiabang, Huanggang and Zhaoxing, before finishing in Yangshuo and Guilin. Group size is limited (2 to 8 people), with French‑speaking guides at each stage, private transport and several high‑speed trains (Kunming–Dali, Lijiang–Kunming, Kunming–Guiyang, Congjiang–Guilin). The first part of the circuit explores Yunnan: Kunming and its Emerald Lake, the Stone Forest, the Yuanyang rice terraces (flooded from early November to mid‑April), Jianshui and its Confucius Temple, then Dali, Xizhou and Shaxi on the ancient Tea Horse Road, the Tiger Leaping Gorge, Shangri‑La with its Tibetan monasteries, and finally Lijiang and Shuhe. You alternate cultural visits, 2–4 hour hikes and nights in charming hotels or carefully selected guesthouses. The second part focuses on the ethnic minorities of Guizhou and the landscapes of Guangxi. Around Kaili, you visit Miao villages (Matang, Langde, Jidao), Shui (Zenlei) and Dong (Zengchong, Zaidang, Jiabang, Huanggang, Zhaoxing), with local encounters, polyphonic singing, village markets and nights in homestays or small inns. The journey ends in Yangshuo, with viewpoints at Xianggong, the Li River (the 20 RMB note scene), a bamboo raft cruise and cycling along the Yulong River, before transfer to Guilin airport or railway station. This trip requires a good level of fitness for long road days and altitude, but it offers a complete route from Kunming to Guilin, with genuine immersion among minority communities and characterful accommodation.
