This
two day hike is one of Shaxi's
highlights.
First
day: hike for approximately 6
hours along the ancient salt trade
route deep into the mountains.
Along the way pass horse caravans
and meet the wood collectors and
traders who supply the Shaxi valley
with its lumber. Drink from fresh
mountain springs and enjoy the
grand views. In the afternoon
arrive at Ma Ping Guan, Bai Minority
village. Ma Ping Guan is a small
village of just a hundred or so
farmers. It is a beautiful old
village that grew out of the necessity
to supply passing traders with
food and lodging. Stay at a local
family's home and eat delicious
local grown foods. Spend the night
around the home hearth chatting
and laughing with your gracious
hosts.
Second day: wake up early and
stroll around the village, or
teach English at the elementary
school (a school of 8 students).
Before noon, depart for the 6
hour hike down. Hike through ancient
forests of tall trees draped in
moss. Arrive at the town of Misha,
home to one of the areas most
important salt wells. Soak in
a local hot springs on the way
back to Shaxi.
